When Should You Update Your Will?

A will (often called a last will and testament) is a document describing what you want to happen to your estate when you pass away. If you have minor children, the will would direct who you want to be the guardian of your children while they are minors. It is important for everyone to have a will if they have assets they want to leave to their family, friends, or charitable donations.

If you have a major life change, such as marriage, divorce, death of a spouse, your own children are grown and you now have grandchildren. Any of those items may change how you want to leave your estate or who you want to leave it to. Another major life change may be moving to a new state, and updating your will could result in the ability to take advantage of different state laws. If you aren’t sure whether it is necessary or the right time to update your will, call Helsper, McCarty & Rasmussen, P.C., and the experienced lawyers there would be happy to answer your questions.
